Music

At Grove House we intend that our pupils will…..

develop their understanding of a variety of music from different periods and cultures, understanding it is a powerful and unique form of communication so that they can enjoy and appreciate different styles and express their own preferences.

At Grove House we believe every young person should be able to experience music and to make progress.  It is founded on the belief that music enriches individual lives as well as the school’s wider community.

Music is studied  in KS2 and KS3 with a lesson every week. At KS4 students have the opportunity to select music and performance as an option subject  for one lesson a week. Lessons are delivered by a subject specialist in the music room, with keyboards available for all students to play, alongside various orchestral and percussion instruments.

The Music curriculum is designed and delivered in a way that allows pupils to build on individual musical skills as well as developing ensemble skills through practical work. The stranded curriculum of listening & responding, composition and performance forms the basis for all lessons in various forms. Students are encouraged to communicate their understanding and interpretation of music through performance and composition.

In KS2 pupils are taught to sing and play musically with increasing confidence and control. They develop an understanding of musical composition, organising and manipulating ideas within musical structures and learn to reproduce sounds from aural memory. They also begin to develop an understanding of the history of music.

In KS3 pupils build on their previous knowledge and skills through performing, composing and listening. They develop their vocal and/or instrumental fluency, accuracy and expressiveness; and understand musical structures, styles, genres and traditions, identifying the expressive use of musical dimensions. They are encouraged to listen with increasing understanding and awareness to inform their practice as musicians. They use technologies appropriately and appreciate and understand a wide range of musical contexts and styles.

In KS4 pupils continue to build and apply their knowledge and skills and have the opportunity to work towards  accreditation through the Arts Awards—Bronze and Silver.
